Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, raised within Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to develop her creativity and was inspired by the arts. Her aunt was a registered nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could dedicate her time to writing, reading, theater and other interests. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the arts can serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way to express her feelings. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked investigate the waste inside the home by a member jury. After being disappointed in journalism and the jobs that she was assigned, the journalist decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. In addition to PR her agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
